Gordon's Fish is a kosher-certified fish market.
In order to qualify for kosher certification, Gordon's Fish has undergone a process of koshering back in 2003. Ever since then we have maintained a valid certificate.

A: "Kosher" is Hebrew for "fit" or "proper" and usually denotes food items and methods of food preparation that adhere to Jewish Dietary Laws, found in the Tora (the Bible, both Leviticus ch.11 and Deuteronomy ch.14).

A: According to Leviticus 11:9 and 10, the Jewish people may consume only those creatures of the sea that have both fins and scales. In addition to these signs, there is also a tradition that goes back hundreds, if not thousands of years, about which species of fish are considered kosher. Therefore, all shellfish is excluded from being "kosher" or "fit" for consumption due to the lack of fins and scales. On the other hand, sturgeon is considered not kosher because of a lack of tradition that permits it.
Based on the above, you can only find those fish at Gordon's Fish that have both fins and scales, and have a Rabbinical tradition as to their kosher status.

A: Gordon's Fish Emporium is certified kosher by Kehilla of Los Angeles, also known as Heart-K.
Rabbi Avrohom Teichman is a well-known posek, and he is the Rav Hamachshir of the Kehilla. Rabbi Daniel Elkouby is the Administrator. You can contact either of them with any questions or concerns. Office: 323 935-8383 Fax: 480 393-4655. You can also email Rabbi Elkouby delkouby@kehillakosher.org

Q: What do you know about fish worms?
A: Our cutters are trained to spot worm infestation should it occur but we hadn't had an incident nor had one reported to us in years. "The Kosher Kitchen", a book published by Illustrated Guides to Jewish Law series, aka Itturei Halacha by Rabbi Ze'ev Greenwald, contains a half-page instructions on fish checking
We sell the fish headed, gutted, and with a scraped skin. According to most sources, this gives 100% assurance of a worm-free fish.

There has been an increased amount of inquiries about this subject lately. Rest assured that we take all matters of kashrus seriously.

The latest conversation I had about fish worms with our mashgiach was Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2010. Click here for a full report on the matter.

Please click here to read a memorandum from the Orthodox Union regarding this matter.

Q: Do you have regular inspections and how often do they take place?

A: Yes, we are inspected on a weekly basis, by a Mashgiach (a representative of the certification agency), who comes spontaneously as he pleases. Our certification is up for renewal every quarter, and it is renewed based on the regular reports by the Mashgiach.
At our request, Rabbi Elkouby has sent us this quick note:
"I am pleased to announce that your store “Gordon’s Fish” is under our strict supervision as stated in your certificate and we therefore assure that all ingredients brought in the store or all products sold from the store is strictly kosher under supervision".
